“The design of tomorrow will probably be feminine, Spanish and coloristic: Patricia Urquiola”. So says art critic and historian Philippe Daverio. If the designs of Patricia Urquiola are cemented unmistakably in the cultured and elegant Italian tradition, their strong, dense colors recall the spirit and determination of Spanish matadors: head and heart. This is the secret behind her new design for living: classic and informal, intimate and versatile, exercising in softness and undulation.

A native of Oviedo in Spain, Patricia Urquiola attended the Facultad de Arquitectura in Madrid, before graduating in 1989 from the Milan Polytechnic under Achille Castiglioni.

Between 1990 and 1996, she was responsible for De Padova’s new product development office and signed the products “Flower,” “Loom Sofa,” and “Chaise Longue” with Vico Magistretti.
From 1993 to 1996, she had an associate practice with architects de Renzio and Ramerino and was engaged in the architectural design of showrooms, restaurants and franchising stores.

Patricia’s seating designs are well known and admired around the world for their concave styling and attention to detail. Her designs, Step and Lowland Sofas, were selected for the International Design Yearbook in 1999/2000 and in 2001 her Lowseat was selected to represent Italian design in the Furniture Design Tour. Patricia Urquiola has received great success in her One container, designed jointly with Piero Lissoni for Kartell.

Patricia Urquiola now directs installations, stands and showrooms for Moroso, Knoll, Sag 80 and Somma, and designs furnishings for Alessi, Agape, B&B, Driade, Foscarini and Molteni &C.

In 2006, Urquiola collaborated with Bisazza for the Salone del Mobile.

On that occasion, Patricia Urquiola and Martino Berghinz created a luminous and fine atmosphere around By Side, an extra large folding screen with polished steel frame and mobile panels of mosaic.

“By Side is an installation where the grandeur and the multiplicity of the folding screen alternates to the ethereal simplicity of the surroundings. The observer actively relates with the structure in a rarefied atmosphere. By Side represents not only a functional object, but one appropriate for the space where it stands. It divides the room in two enchanting areas where the panels can be rotated to complement both sceneries: one attracts the spectator in a Tolie de Jouy enriched with glowing highlights while the other accompanies the viewer in a game of reflections” Patricia Urquiola and Martino Berghinz.

The original By Side folding screen is showcased currently in the Exhibition Halls at Bisazza Headquarters in Vicenza, Italy. A smaller version of the screen folder (200×200cm) is included in the Bisazza Home collection available to the public.

Urquiola’s unique and inspiring design style can also be seen in the graphic pattern she designed for Bisazza Mosaic collection: multiple lines and geometrical shapes in different shades of green and blue weave together to create modular patterns similar to net.

A fresh design suitable for any environment in the house.

A decorative border in Bisazza glass mosaic offers endless possibilities to enhance interior design.

A stylish decorative border can brighten a white room, add elegance to wall coverings, bring luxury to the kitchen or turn flooring into a fashionable work of art.

Stylish updates to the home no longer require complete renovations with elegant, luxurious additions such as decorative tile borders. Bisazza mosaic added in a sophisticated and chic border will transform a room into something new, beautiful and artistic.

Different colors and patterns of Bisazza glass mosaic offer endless opportunities for enhanced home decoration. The popular and timeless Bisazza glass tile in 24 karat yellow gold shimmers and shines in border decoration to enrich design elements in nearly any room of the home. The beauty of gold when used in border design is the unlimited ability to mix and match. Gold can be added alone in a decorative border or with a multitude of other colors or patterns to intensify the beauty of the space.

Mosaic patterns and decorations when used in border design can create a focal point for design in any room. Vibrant patterns, geometric shapes, florals or stripes can become a work of art when used in flooring, backsplash or wall covering border design.

After the recent restyling of the New York flagship store, Bisazza opened its second showroom in North America, part of the strategic plan of the company to enhance the brand identity through the opening of flagship stores that are all aesthetically consistent, while reflecting the sophisticated and unique style of Bisazza.

The flagship stores, with their homogeneous and lush appearance, are located in the major design capitals of the world: Antwerp, Barcelona, Berlin, Chicago, London, Miami, Milan, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo.

The Los Angeles store, as all others, was designed by the Bisazza Design Studio, a team of young designers directed by architect Carlo Dal Bianco, that coordinates the company’s style and product collections. The space is conceived as a series of living areas, a succession of rooms illustrating residential environments and showing the versatility and aesthetic qualities of mosaic design.

The entrance is characterized by the presence of four columns clad in Righe Oro, a simple decoration in stripes of gold and white mosaic. On the floor Dama Nera, a checker board black and white pattern inspired by the British optical fabrics. It leads to the first room where gold is the main motif with the walls clad in Damasco Oro Giallo, inspired by the traditional brocades, on one side, and Etoiles Oro Giallo, a fine lace motif, on the other.
The second room is dominated by the white color, and the perfect match of flowers and graphic decorations with Winter Flowers Oro Bianco, inspired by the old French fabrics, and Liaisons Bianco, a pattern designed as an ethereal jewel of white and gold.

The library shelters the complete Bisazza collection, classic patterns alongside the newest decorations. This space, with its dark colors and ebony wood, draws its inspiration from the neo classical libraries of the XIX century and is present as a leitmotiv in all the Bisazza flagship stores worldwide.

The floor is also characterized by Vienna Nero, a peculiar decoration that is reminiscent of the traditional Viennese chairs.

The last and more intimate room showcases SpringRose Nero, a naturalistic representation of blossoming tea roses inspired by the pergolas and arbors of Victorian gardens.

The ten Marie Antoinette chandeliers that illuminate the store belong to the Bisazza Home collection, an assortment of furniture and decorative accessories designed by leading designers such as: Andrée Putman, Patricia Urquiola, Marcel Wanders, Studio Job, Jaime Hayon and Jürgen Mayer H.

The collection, combines mosaic and other luxury materials, and creates a unique take on home decoration characterized by boundless creativity.

The “dreamy-pop” vases, entitled Antenahat, Ballhat, Bulletrabbit, Black Bulletrabbit, Openholes, Openmuñeco and Pointyhat, are all numbered as part of Bisazza’s Limited Editions collection, a limited edition series of exquisite works with Bisazza mosaic tile.

With Pixel Vases, the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon unconventionally experiments with mosaic through his own personal language.

“… the intention is to break with the traditional use of the Bisazza elements… where the mosaic application can become any shape, any intention within artistic expression.” (Jaime Hayon)

The use of mosaic with ceramic, resulted in objects of uncommon and voluptuous shapes.

Each vase looks like a lead character of a fairy tale environment and represents a luring and intriguing way of using mosaic.

Openholes

Whether it is a striking, modern living room you desire or a comforting, soothing space, glass tile decoration adds luxury and opulence fitting for every interior design theme.

Bisazza glass mosaic tile used to create one standout design element, such as the Bonaparte wall mural, will serve as an endless conversation-starter and timeless piece of art to fit with any changing surrounding décor.

Glass mosaic tile also serves as wallpaper to clad an entire living room wall with lavish, shimmering decoration. Vibrant colors or patterns of glass mosaic can be chosen to design one accent wall, or subtle hues of mosaic work together to design an entire space. Choose from shining shades of aqua, blue and navy to create a serene space or combine Bisazza’s red mosaic, orange, purple and yellow to create a warm, inviting room complete with this year’s hot design colors.

Bisazza’s glass mosaic tile patterns add fashion to interior design. Whether used in wall coverings, ceiling adornments, fireplace surrounds or glass tile furniture design, patterned mosaic tile makes the living room a place to receive guests, relax with loved ones or simply enjoy your home surroundings.

With gorgeous color coordination, inspiring patterns, modern or vintage accents and a range of complimentary finishes and textures, glass tile accented living spaces create a visually stimulating area both unique and individual sure to be the most inspiring place in the home.

Bisazza will open its fourth American flagship store in Miami, Florida on Tuesday, December 1st 2009, coinciding with Design Miami, a prestigious international art and design fair.

With the opening of the new Flagship Store in Miami, planned for Tuesday December 1st 2009, Bisazza Mosaico confirms its strong interest in strengthening its presence in the United States, an increasingly important market where the company has already opened three stores during the last few years (in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York).

The new store is located in the Design District area inside an impressive building and occupies a space of 400 square meters. The airy and luminous environments are perfectly fit for displaying the Bisazza Mosaic Collection and Bisazza Home, an assortment of furniture and decorative accessories signed by leading designers such as: Andrée Putman, Jaime Hayon, Marcel Wanders, Patricia Urquiola.

Within this setting, the decorative value of every single piece fully discloses itself and introduces an elegant interior style suitable for all living spaces.

The opening of the new flagship store coincides with Design Miami, the prestigious international art and design fair.

On that occasion, the showroom will showcase some pieces from the “Silver Ware” collection, designed by Studio Job for Bisazza Limited Editions, an exclusive selection of limited edition works. These precious out-of-scale sculptures, entirely clad in white gold mosaic, represent the perfect fusion between art and design.

The Miami flagship store was designed by architect Carlo Dal Bianco, director of the Bisazza Design Studio, who has conceived, along the years, all Bisazza stores located in the main capitals of design: Antwerp, Barcelona, Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Milan, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rome and Tokyo.

Creative color, modern minimalism, perfect patterns.

A bedroom is place of tranquility, peace and restfulness. The design and décor of the room directly affects the experience, both awake and asleep, in the space. Whether a grand space, room enough for more than the usual bedroom accoutrements, or a small room serving as both home office and bedroom – with the right design, any size space can become the most inspiring place inside the home.

WINTERFLOWERS ORO BIANCO, pattern in Bisazza glass and white gold mosaic. Design Carlo Dal Bianco.

When it comes to interior design, many elements fit together to become pieces of one whole room. The best places to start when beginning a bedroom design project are colors, theme and wall coverings. First, choose the colors and theme to be present throughout the room. It is important to consider base colors (tans, neutrals, white) and accent colors (bold, pastel or black) as well as the theme you wish these colors to fit into (modern, classic, chic, understated.)

For luxury and innovation, mosaic tile wall coverings add opulence and fashion to any bedroom space. Bisazza mosaic in various colors, styles and patterns is ideal for wall decoration. To enhance bedroom space, everything from a mosaic mural to tile “wallpaper” covering the length of a wall, adds style and significance.

RIGHE BIANCO BLU, pattern in Bisazza glass mosaic. Design Carlo Dal Bianco.

WALLPAPER GREY, pattern in Bisazza glass mosaic. Design Marcel Wanders.

Mosaic is a timeless design element, yet remains contemporary and true to the latest trends in fashion and home furnishings. Reserve classic styles with sophisticated mosaic wall coverings in classic colors; apply glass mosaic in a vibrant pattern for trendy fashion; or pick a patterned wall design for an eye-catching, avant-garde effect.

SUITE VIOLA, pattern in Bisazza glass and yellow gold mosaic. Design Marco Braga.

RINGS ORO BIANCO, pattern in Bisazza glass and white gold mosaic. Design Carlo Dal Bianco.

The walls are the building blocks to decorating bedroom space. Calming yellows, tans and blues or vibrant purple paired with silver and black will set the tone and mood for the space. Beginning with innovative material, such as glass tile, will establish décor in itself for the entire space. Bisazza glass tile will enhance the beauty, architecture and elevate the style of your environment with texture, color and fashion.

Once wall decoration is in place, mixing and matching textiles as well as theme genres will add dimension and style to the space. Utilize contrasting textiles, such as glass tile paired with leather and wooden furniture. Mix classic glamour with modern minimalist style and interchange color palettes to achieve inspiring bedroom design.

DAMASCO ORO BIANCO, pattern in Bisazza glass and white gold mosaic.

Gold and black make a stunning pair for a glamorous kitchen makeover. Natasha Levak, interior designer for Coco Republic, combines Bisazza mosaic tiles with varying stunning textures to create bold patterns and unique surface design in this Sydney, Australia kitchen.

Private House – Sydney, Australia. Interior designer Natasha Levak for Coco Republic. Photo by Steve Back.

Levak expects for the coming year that international design styles will be blended for interior decoration, as designers choose from the best of around the world. With eclectic styles, patterns and motifs inspired by American, English, French and Italian styles, diverse interior design is getting stronger and will be seen more prominently in private home design.

For this particular kitchen remodel, Levak was given the task of creating a unique kitchen to add interest to an area that is typically formal and functional. The owner was seeking a mix of materials and color for a glamorously exclusive kitchen space.

Levak used Twill Oro Giallo mosaic to create the stunning yellow gold splashback paired with Stripes Fall tile for the recessed back bar. Set against the predominately high-gloss black countertops, flooring and cooktop, the gold shines brilliantly under pendant halogen downlighting.

Private House – Sydney, Australia. Interior designer Natasha Levak for Coco Republic. Photo by Steve Back.

Gold tile allows a wide range of luminous effects and shades, particularly because of the diffusion and vibration of light off the gold tesserae. The Bisazza gold mosaic featured in this kitchen makeover comes from the Bisazza Oro Collection, a composition of hand-applied 24-karat gold leaf between two layers of glass, to form Bisazza’s most opulent tile product.

The opulence of glass tile, paired with varying textures, offers a sophisticated palette with a hint of glamour. Gold and black provides a classic, traditional color palette and the mix of textures with shimmering gold (from tan cowhide leather bar stools to gold-leafed Bisazza tiles) gives a strong and modern twist to this practical space.

October 31st marks the scariest day of the year. And along with that comes spooky, frightening and ghostly decorations for the home.

For some, Halloween lasts throughout the year and dark, chilling design is an everyday home accent. Those who love year-round spook will find comfort in the patterned mosaic tile Silhouette, designed by the Belgian-Dutch duo Studio Job for Bisazza. With mysterious images featured, including skull and crossbones, this patterned tile brings the unexpected to everyday interior design.

Silhouette, Bisazza glass mosaic pattern. Design by Studio Job. Photo by Federico Cedrone

Those who marvel in unfamiliar décor will find Silhouette to fit well in the luxurious, modern home day-to-day, and will find the perfect back drop to Hallows Eve decorations on the one night each year we celebrate the strange and abnormal. With brilliantly decorated jack-o-lanterns, cobwebs and goblins present, this mosaic wall will create the perfect setting for the spookiest Halloween party or scariest Haunted House.
